Vocabulary Report

  • ratio -

A pair of numbers that shows a comparison of two quantities and can be written as 9:4, 9/4, or 9 to 4.

  • percent -

A ratio in which the first term is compared to 100; number out of 100.

  • least common multiple (LCM) -

The smallest number that is a multiple of two or more numbers.

  • equal ratio -

Ratios that show the same comparison.

  • proportion -

A statement that two ratios are equal.

  • common denominator -

A number that is the denominator of two or more fractions.

  • lowest terms -

For ratios, the left side and right side can be divided by the same divisor. This gives equivalent ratios. Example: The ratio 15:45=3:9...divide both 15 and 45 by 5= 1:3...divide both 3 and 9 by 3.

  • simplest form -

A fraction in which the numerator and denominator have no common factors other than one.

  • improper fraction -

A fraction in which the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator.

  • greatest common factor (GCF) -

The highest number that divides exactly into two or more numbers.

  • proper fraction -

A fraction smaller than one whole; the denominator is larger than the numerator.

  • mixed numbers -

A number written as a whole number with a fraction.

  • least common denominator -

The least common multiple of the denominators of two fractions.

  • equivalent fraction -

Fractions that name the same part of a whole region, length, or set ( 1/3=2/6)
